Chalk Group Lithostratigraphy: Northern England - Middleton Marls
Wood & Smith (1978) identified a c. 50 mm thick brown marl, underlain by spongiferous chalk and the inoceramid bivalve Inoceramus digitatus, as the Middleton Marl. This marl equates with the Upper Middleton Marl of Whitham (1991), minor marls a short distance below, similarly underlain by spongiferous chalk, being designated the Lower Middleton Marls. An un-named marl also occurs above the Upper Middleton Marl of Whitham (1991).
Macrofossil Biozonation: lower M. coranguinum Zone (= Lower Hagenowia rostrata Zone of Whitham, 1991)
