Whitham (1993) identified a single Danes Dyke Upper Marl (= Dane Dyke Upper Marl 1), this being a a c. 30-40 mm thick, grey, chalky marl, the base marking the base of the Sewerby Member. Subsequently, (Mitchell, 1995) identified two other marls in the 5.8 m of overlying chalk, and named them Danes Dyke Upper Marls 2 and 3. The latter are 15-20 mm thick marls, and are conspicuous in an interval of the Sewerby Member in which marls are otherwise poorly developed (Mitchell, 1995).
