The Paramoudra Chalk is exposed on the Norfolk coast between East Runton [TG 2010 4210] and Cromer [TG 2200 4220] (Peake & Hancock, 1970; Pitchford, 1990a). In the Trunch Borehole [TG 2933 3455] this unit may be 60 m thick (Arthurton et al., 1994), but Pitchford (1990a) and Johansen & Surlyk (1990) estimate c. 22-25 m. This division is characterised by vertical columns of cylindrical flints (paramoudras) up to several metres in height (Wood, 1988; Pitchford, 1990a). Paramoudras, formed around the burrow Bathichnus paramoudrae (Bromley et al., 1975), appear sporadically in the higher part of the Beeston Chalk, but become especially abundant in the lower part of the Paramoudra Chalk in the Norwich area, where a twofold subdivision is recognised (Paramoudra1 & Paramoudra2) (Wood, 1988). The coastal succession is apparently rather barren of fauna (Wood, 1988), and there is no published lithological log to compare with the Norwich succession. East of Cromer, there are (?glacially disturbed) subtidal reefs of (?Paramoudra) chalk (Peake & Hancock, 1970). The top of the Paramoudra Chalk is marked by the Overstrand Pyramidata Hardground.
