The Porcellaneous Beds of Morter & Wood (1983), comprise a unit of creamy-coloured, sparsely fossiliferous chalky limestones with a porcellaneous texture, c. 14 m thick in the Clare Borehole [TL 7834 4536], near Sudbury (Pattison et al., 1993), and 6-7 m thick in the Ely district (Gallois, 1988). North of the BGS Marnham Borehole [TF 7051 0803] the Porcellaneous Beds become condensed and eventually form the Paradoxica Bed of north Norfolk successions (Morter & Wood, 1983). Southwards across the Bury St Edmunds district, the Porcellaneous Beds expand further, and the porcellaneous limestones become intercalated with marls (Bristow, 1990), resembling the typical Chalk Marl of the Southern Region.
