Base: The base of the zone is defined by the first appearance of the index species (Schulz, 1979)
Range of index species: The index ranges from the base of the nominate zone, through the B. (P.) pseudobtusa Zone to the basal B. (P.) obtusa Zone. In the Kronsmoor - Hemmoor sections, there is a restricted occurrence of Belemnella (Pachybelemnella) desnensis just above the middle of the zone, and acmes of Belemnella (Pachybelemnella) inflata and Belemnella (B.) longissima (Schulz, 1979).
Biostratigraphical correlation: The zone equates with the basal part of the B. lanceolata Zone s.l. of the standard macrofossil zonal scheme.
Lithostratigraphical correlation: The zone equates with the basal part of the Sidestrand Chalk Member (Johansen & Surlyk, 1990).
