The onshore Chalk Group succession in the UK belongs to the Late Cretaceous Period, and represents the Cenomanian, Turonian, Coniacian, Santonian, Campanian and Maastrichtian Ages. In the North Sea, the youngest part of the Chalk Group (Ekofisk Formation) belongs to the basal Paleogene Period (Danian Age). The rock intervals corresponding to each of the above Ages are termed Stages, and they bear the same names as the Ages (e.g. Cenomanian Stage etc.).
