Ken Chew, BSc, PhD

Ken is a geologist with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of Aberdeen. After working for BP Petroleum Development in Aberdeen as a petroleum geologist, Ken moved to the Geology Department of University College Galway, where he lectured mainly on applied aspects of geology.

In 1978 he joined Petroconsultants, now an IHS company, working for the company in Dublin and Geneva before moving to his home in the Scottish Highlands from where he worked part-time until his retirement from IHS in December 2010.

After spending 18 years managing and developing the Petroconsultants / IHS International Exploration & Production database, Ken became manager of the Company and Country statistical modules of the IHS online database. He also carried out analysis based on IHS’s international E&P database with emphasis on global hydrocarbon supply and resources (conventional and non-conventional), and on E&P company performance. He has published or co-authored over 25 papers and articles and presented some 50 public talks on various aspects of worldwide hydrocarbon E&P and resources; E&P databases; database standards; information management.

Ken still works occasionally as an independent analyst of unconventional oil and gas exploration and production activity.
