The limestones contain marine faunas and are usually argillaceous. These limestones are laterally extensive and have standard names that can be used throughout the Midland Valley. The proportion of limestone increases to the west. The sandstones are generally off-white and fine- to medium-grained. The coals are usually less than 0.6 m thick. Minor lithologies include ironstone and cannel, and there are some volcanic rocks. Upward-fining sequences of coarse- to fine-grained sandstones passing up into finer-grained rocks are also present.&lt;br /&gt;

The formation comprises &amp;#039;&amp;#039;mixed shelf carbonate and deltaic (‘Yoredale’) facies&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. The lower parts of the cycles, including almost all limestones and many mudstones, were deposited in marine environments. The upper parts of the cycles, including sandstones and coals, were deposited as progradational lobate deltas. A study of some Namurian marine faunas of central Scotland.&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, Vol. 66, 445–490.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; the brachiopod &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Antiquatonia costata&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is only found in the Orchard Limestone, whilst &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Pugnax&amp;#039;&amp;#039; cf. &amp;#039;&amp;#039;pugnus&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Sinuatella&amp;#039;&amp;#039; cf. &amp;#039;&amp;#039;sinuata&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (with the bivalve &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Actinopteria regularis&amp;#039;&amp;#039;) are only associated with the Calmy Limestone. The gastropods &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Meekospira&amp;#039;&amp;#039; sp. in the Index Limestone, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Straparollus (Euomphallus) carbonarius &amp;#039;&amp;#039;in the Orchard Limestone and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Euphemites ardenensis&amp;#039;&amp;#039; with the bivalve &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Edmondia punctatella&amp;#039;&amp;#039; in the Calmy Limestone fauna have short vertical ranges with their acme at the level mentioned. The bivalve &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Streblopteria ornata&amp;#039;&amp;#039; disappears after ranging up to the Lyoncross Limestone, whilst the nautiloid &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Tylonautilus nodiferus&amp;#039;&amp;#039; has not been found below the Calmy Limestone. The nonmarine bivalve genera in the formation are &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Curvirimula&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Naiadites&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;
