== Output ==

The most recent figures available of the output from the main Highland quarries were collected for the year 1937 by Mr. T. Graham, F.I.O.B., 45 Castle Street, Edinburgh, to whom we are much indebted for the information in the following table:

From 1870 to 1880 it is probable that the output of Scottish slates was in the neighbourhood of 25 million to 30 million per annum, giving employment to approximately 1,000 to 1,500 men and boys.

Some information concerning output prior to 1870 is contained in various publications in which reference is made to the Scottish slate industry, and is set out in the following table:
