Most notably large blocks of the local Shaftesbury Sandstone were commonly used. Gold Hill descends the steep scarp face of the Shaftesbury Sandstone (Upper Greensand). Beyond the roofs of the houses in the middle distance, landslipped ground of the basal beds of the Upper Greensand (Cann Sand) can be seen, with beyond, the escarpment of the Chalk. The glauconitic and calcareous sandstones from the Lower Cretaceous succession in the Shaftesbury area are still quarried for building stone.
